Req: Edit a PDF file

M

ms

I see the same issue in Acrobat Reader 3 that I saw before in 4: It only copies
*some* PDF files. I need highlight, copy functions. Due to permissions, etc. in
creating PDF files, many of these files don't permit copy, and PDF2Text does not
work on them either.

I tried Foxit PDF Editor, it crashed my older computer (W98SE).

Suggestions for a PDF editor that works in spite of file restrictions? (copy
functions only)

Does Print work when copy does not? What if you print a new pdf copy
(use a PDF print driver, url below) and then try copy function when
you open the output file in the Acrobat Reader?

<http://www.cutepdf.com/products/CutePDF/writer.asp>
(requires Ghostscript, link on site)

<http://www.dirfile.com/acropdf.htm>
(last freeware ver., does not require Ghostscript, if memory serves)

Thanks, Bjorn, but a bit of explanation, please.

Normally, if I select Print, that's what happens, no copy option IIRC.
How does the above exactly work?

BTW, I can open and view most PDF files in Acrobat Reader, just not copy.

I am looking into Acropdf now.

You install the PDF-printer driver. Then you open your current PDF
file (the one that does not allow copy) in AR (Acrobat Reader), choose
PRINT, then select the new PDF-printer driver instead of your regular
printer. The printer driver pops up a dialog asking for a output file
name (for a new PDF file). Type it and continue with OK or print. The
new PDF file gets saved to where you wanted it. Find it. Then open
this new file in AR - and see if you can use the copy feature now.
See?

The PDF printer just prints the content of the current PDF file to a
new PDF file, but the new PDF file - since it is created by the
PDF-printer, should not inherit any restrictions form the original
file your printed from, so copy should work now. At least that is the
general idea. Try it.

- off to bed now...
