On my system an infra red modem driver works fine with my mobile phone
so the port is ok. However I can't get Wireless Link to launch from
the control panel so am unable to set it up. I suspect a file ore
registry entry is lost or corrupt. Can I force a reinstall of the
components?
Windows 2000 Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 on PIII-1000 MHz
laptop 512MB ram. Internal IrDA.
Thanks
Richard

Sorry Hairy One (you bu**er - I'm nearly bald!) but you suggested
latest versions. I have the Microsoft service packs loaded (up to 4)
and they include the Ir security patch. Also it is the current Nokia
software. The indications are that my problems are in Win2K not the
Nokia software.
Here is a note of what I have found:-

The mobile phone internal modem can be interrogated by the dignostics
mode under control settings-panel-phone and modem options-modem so the
ir port is working.
Settings-control panel-Wireless Link will not open. No error
messages.
Device manager shows built-in infra red device driver as irsir.sys and
only setting is speed which is at 115000. Device reports as working
correctly.

Yep - that's the modem (comment of the century ;o). With Nokia you have two
wholly different bits of code - the modem driver (IrDA bit supplied by a
company in Germany), and the actual link.

The standard MS link stuf just plain doesn't work. (Caveat: IIRC you can get
it to communicate, but it always sayd something on the lines of "hmm.
Nothing there"

You *must* communicate using the Nokia software.

(This is for address books etc. If you have a newer phone, then I'm not
sure. Seriously, I'd try Nokia themselves [I don't believe that I was the
only person to point out said company in Germany, but, either way, they
listened.

It might help to know what sort of additional data you're trying to send -
someone might have an alternative! (Please also state phone - that'd
probably help!)

I have the Nokia PC Suite 4.88 installed (Iremoved and reinstalled
just in case). It seems to expect to use the Microsoft drivers
because there are comments in the nokia PC Suite help such as:-

You can use infrared to connect your phone to a compatible PC. The
infrared connection is available for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP. Note that
in Windows 2000 and Windows XP the infrared connection is called
Wireless Link.

Note:
To be able to use an infrared connection with Windows 2000 and Windows
XP, you must first disable the Image Transfer application in the
Wireless Link software.

I wanted to use PC Suite to manage my address book and to handle java
appliaction installation.

I can't see any drivers having been installed with PC Suite, Only with
the modem install. The installation setup consists of sel extracting
zips containing cabs so it's not easy to see if there are drivers
hidden in there that are not being installed.

IIRC, you need to do some post-installation configuration, to set COM/IrDA
port. Can't remember all of the details (it's probably been a couple of
years ;o), but have you done something similar? What are the settings?
