I create a rule to move an incoming message to a specific folder. I then
check to run the rule on the current folder (selected). The rule is created
but
does not move the messages. I recreate the rule (creating) a rule with the
same name ending in (1) and then it runs successfully on the current folder.

What type of account are we talking about here?
Try starting Outlook with the /cleanrules switch to remove all the rules
from your default data store and recreate the rules.

Thanks for your help. I've got lots of rules. Over 40. It would really
take quite a bit of work to recreate them all. Is there a way to back them
up and then restore them?

The problem started after upgrading from Outlook xp to '03.

Sure, you can export your rules and then redo them. Look in the Rules and
Alerts Options.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.
