Reply marker in newsgroup header thread

L

Lil' Dave

I use OE exclusively for reading an replying to newsgroups via genuine news
server. Have noticed an inconsistency in usage that I need some help with.
Most of the time, when I make a reply within a thread, and check the
following day on that thread, there's a red marker to the upper RH side of
the original post header. When I mouse click the header "+" to the left of
the original post header, all downloaded reply headers are shown along with
my reply header included. That I consider normal.

What sometimes happens that is inconsistent is the red marker does not show
in some cases (never shows or changes red), even though my reply header is
shown within the thread.. Why?

Have used OE since 95 OS reading Uncle Gus's inputs. I don't remember not
noticing this. So, its nothing new.

The arrow down marker appears on the message replied to. This may not be
the first message in the thread.

I use Ctrl+H to switch to and from Replies to my messages. This makes
the point you query clear on my machine.

You posted the quoted message below using the "munged" email address
(e-mail address removed). If you reply to this thread using a different email
address (e.g., (e-mail address removed); (e-mail address removed)), OE will not see
it as "your" post and the posts/thread will not be recognized as "yours."

This usually happens when you post to a thread or newsgroup using different
machines where your MS News account is not configured with the identical
email address on all machines.

I use the same obviously bogus return email address both at msnews and the
earthlink.net news server. Been about 3 or 4 years since I changed the
munged email address to what it is now. For the past 3 years, been using
the same PC at the same physical location for newsgroups.

I don't change much of the default OE news settings except to download the
last 1000 headers. I don't download messages except for the expressed
condition that I intend to read same online. Thanks anyway.

Are you only seeing this behavior in the newsgroups being accessed via the
Earthlink newsserver, via the MS newsserver, or both?

Are you accessing one or more newsgroups where you're seeing this behavior
(e.g., WinXP General) via both newsservers?

Do you access the newsgroups where you're seeing this behavior on more than
one machine?

Try this instead and see if it helps:

Tools | Options | Read | Get XXX headers at a time

The default is 300. You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane | Synchronization Settings | select New
Messages Only. Now every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will
download the next-newest set of headers/messages..

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:

there).

Both.

Don't see any pattern. Happens in the newgroups where I may do the most
replies. A once in awhile like once a week or month reply in a newsgroup, I
never see the problem. Happens with both news servers. I only use msnews
for ms newsgroups, and the remainder I use the earthlink news server.

The few times I've used my laptop for that a couple of years ago, yes. But,
didn't matchup exactly with the PC regarding the missing red OP header reply
markers.

I purposely only download all the headers. I don't download messages except
to read an individual message one at a time. I read (and reply if I choose)
while online only. The reason I do it this way is to keep all the cached
messages to a minimum. I found throught the years if I do it this way, it
reduces the need to intermittently flush the headers and messages and start
anew. OE typically starts crapping out after about a year of usage this
way. Downloading all headers/messages accelerates that degradation process.

Please confirm that you've unchecked "Get XXX headers at a time" and then
compacted all OE folders
(http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact).

If still no joy, run the following test:

1. Create two (2) new identities via File | Identities | Add new identity.

2. Set up an MS news account (only) in one of the identities, and set up an
Earthlink news account (only) in the other one, then subscribe to a few
newsgroups in each identity/newsserver.

3. Download at least 1,000 headers in each of the newsgroups then do a Catch
Up Now in each newsgroup (see previous reply).

4. Uncheck "Get XXX headers at a time" in each identity.

5. Does the behavior persist now in each of the 2 new identities?

Probably because you saved your composition window to Drafts
(e.g. pressed Ctrl-s) before sending.

Correct. ; )
