Replication error

Mindaugas

Hi,

Hello,

We have Windows 2000 AD (Forest root domain and many child
domains). Every domain is a separate location and it is
defined as separate site.
We see replication errors from NTDS KCC, Event ID 1265:
failed with the following status: The replication
operation encountered a database error.
And also we see errors on child domain DC: Event ID:
1559 "A request has been made to promote this DSA to a
Global Catalog (GC). A precondition to becoming a GC is
that this server host a read-only copy of all partitions
in the enterprise. This server should hold a copy of
partition DC=child,DC=company,DC=local but it does not.
This system will not be promoted to a GC until this
condition is met. This may be because the KCC has not
run, or that it is unable to add a replica of the
partition because all of its sources are down. Please
check the event log for KCC errors. The KCC will retry
adding the replica"
I found http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;253644 but we do not use universal groups -
all domais still in mixed mode. Also Forest prep was run
on root domain. All servers are with SP4.
I found this problem when Exchange server was unable to
start services (probably because of reason, that it could
not find a GC).

Any ideas?

are domain prep also done?

Install Windows Server Support Tools and run the command line based tool
repadmin with the syntax below

repadmin /showreps /v

Post back the output.

Domain prep was done on one of child domains.
Regarding repadmin /showreps /v : I am afraid, that this
output would be too big to fit here. (I don't understand
why KCC generates so many replication partners - now
approximately 40 other DC's for central server), but I can
paste here examples with successfull and unsuccessfull
cases:

All replications for root domain is successfull:

You say you have no Windows Server 2003 Domain Controllers, But the schema
are prepared for Windows Server 2003 right?

No, schema prepared for Exchange 2000 (setup /forestprep)
and one of the child domains is also prepared for Exchange
2000 (setup /domainprep).
