network illiterate

I just bought a new computer for my work office with XP
Pro to replace my very old computer. I have reinstalled
all my programs, etc, but was wondering what I have to do
to make this new computer part of the network. Are there
IP settings I have to put in? I have named the computer
and workgroup the same as the old computer, but does the
computer have to have an ip address or something?

I actually posted this for my friend. He works in a small
company that has about 16 computers. I think I remember he
said that the receptionists computer was the host
computer, but beyond that I do not know the setup. I don't
think they have a server, probably just a hub. Is there
anything on the old computer that could help me determine
how it was set up before? Does the file and transer
settings wizard transfer network settings also? Sorry if
these are lame questions, but trying to help friend not to
have to pay pricey computer guy to come to his business :)

two things
do you have a domain with a server or just peer to peer?

if server/domain right click on my computer and select
properties..then select computer name tab then select
network ID to join the domain.
If on peer to peer run the network connection wizard and
make sure all the other syystems are loaded with the xp
network stuff that you will load onto floppy, and
distribute to all other non xp systems

good luck

There's no reason to run the XP Network Setup Wizard on any other
computers. They're already set up for networking. Run it only on the
new computer.
