network illiterate

I just bought a new computer with XP Pro to replace my
very old computer. I have reinstalled all my programs,
etc, but was wondering what I have to do to make this new
computer part of the network. Are there IP settings I have
to put in? I have named the computer and workgroup the
same as the old computer, but does the computer have to
have an ip address or something?

What IP settings did the old computer have? Make the same settings on
the new one.
