Replacing Explorer

Is there any way to change default explorer.exe with a custom file
manager? I've been looking for a way to use a custom UI that I can add
to over time and decided to write my own, but would like it to work in
place of explorer.exe.

I know of several frwr dualpane or single pane explorers, if you know
enuf about programming, maybe get one and fiddle with it, if it is
opensource......
