"Windows is working with a file" ?

Hi,

I have added a second harddrive SATA-2 to my desktop computer running WinXP
SP2. I just plugged it in and it was recognized and started working from
scratch. There is only one flaw:

My original harddrive is C: and my new harddrive is J:.

If I copy a file from J: and paste it to C: then I have no problem. But if I
cut/move the file and paste it to C: then it will begin to write it but never
finish and the non-working file at the destination C: is not possible to
delete unless I reboot. Explorer will also hang. However, when I try to
reboot, Windows won't let me saying that "Windows is currently working with a
file" and I have to wait, although nothing will happen when I wait. The hung
Explorer will eventually drag most apps down with it in the hanging swamp.

I can get around this by going into task manager and ending Explorer.exe and
even though this will not end that process I can launch another instance of
explorer.exe which seems to take precedence because after this I can use the
file manager again and I can also exit windows and reboot.

Why is happening, and more importantly, how can I address this issue?

Thanks a lot.

when I move/copy a file from one HD to another there is no cut or paste
option.
I simply grab the file with a right click of the mouse and drag it to where
I want it to go...when I release the mouse I get
the option to Move or Copy....
Working in a file and moving parts of the file I get the options you
describe ..and therefore need another file to copy/paste to.
Which one are you attempting to do???

Hi, thanks for replying.

I am trying variants of your first option. What I do is to right-click
(release button) on the source file and then choose copy/cut from the
popup-menu. Then I do right-click on the target drive and choose paste from
the popup-menu.

Alternatively I do left-button click and drag together with Ctrl/Shift key
on the keyboard for copy/paste.

I presume all these three ways do the same thing. I tried your version
(right-click drag) and I get the same problematic situation if I choose
"move" but not if I choose "copy" which is consistent with the problems I am
experiencing.

I cant seem to duplicate that on my machines..
could you post the specs of your system..Mobo/HD and how they are connected.
