Replacing Damaged Windows XP Pro CD?

My primary hard drive died recently. I ordered a replacement, got it
yesterday, installed it, pulled out my Windows XP Pro CD, went through the
Windows install process... eventually got an error because the CD I'm using
has become slightly damaged over time.

The CD is a Windows XP Pro w/ Service Pack 2 upgrade disc I purchased from
Office Depot last year. After attempting to install Windows using an XP Pro
w/ Service Pack 1 CD that came with my Dell laptop, I learned that you can't
do this; you have to have the same kind of CD you originally purchased. I
called Microsoft customer support about this-- they transferred me to
Activations, who transferred me back to customer support, who transferred me
to Activations again.

So now I turn to this newsgroup. Does anyone know how I can get a
replacement CD for my damaged Windows XP Pro disc?

Thanks very much!

If you already installed it with your CD from your laptop and the Product Key
from your laptop, click Start, Run, type in
"%WINDIR%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe" and press enter. When on the activation
screen, look for a spot that will allow you to change your Product Key.

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer.

That wouldn't help, in this case. The OP's Product Key is for a Retail
Upgrade license, but he used an OEM installation CD.

Product Keys are bound to the specific type and language of
CD/license (OEM, Volume, retail, full, or Upgrade) with which they are
purchased. For example, a WinXP Home OEM Product Key won't work for any
retail version of WinXP Home, or for any version of WinXP Pro, and vice
versa. An upgrade's Product Key cannot be used with a full version CD,
and vice versa. An OEM Product Key will not work to install a retail
product. An Italian Product Key will not work with an English CD.
Bottom line: Product Keys and CD types cannot be mixed & matched.

Go to a store, office supply or music ...buy a cd scratch
cleaner/resurfacer,not just a cleaner.this will scim off a tiny layer of
disc,so if it's not a dep scratch will fix it.
