replacing cdrw with dvdrw

I have two optical drives... a dvd drive and a cdrw
drive, I have just installed an NEC dvd+/-rw drive in
place of my cdrw drive. All I did was unplugged the
power and data cable and replace them in the new drive
and powered the system up. Now my system won't recognize
any optical drives. It was an oem version drive so I
have no drivers or manuals, but everyone at newegg
(except me) says that xp detects and installs
automatically.

any help would be great!!!

Make sure the jumper at the back is set the same way it was
on the old drive. It could be either master, slave or cable select.

At a guess, the new drive isn't jumpered correctly (master, slave, cable
select). You may need to change it to match the drive that you removed.
(This isn't a big deal.)

You didn't say which model you have, but I Googled up a manual for some
recent drives (2100, 2500, 2510):

http://www.de.nec.de/software/1580_MultiDe.pdf

There may also be a description of the jumper settings on a label on the
drive itself, but you'd probably have to remove the drive from the PC so
that you can read it.

Does the PC's BIOS detect the drives?

I can't say that every internal IDE optical drive built in the past 8 years
uses the Windows drivers, but every one that I've seen uses the default
drivers.

Good luck.

Address altered. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

I ordered the NEC ND2500A from newegg.com and it came in Cable Select
for the jumpers. You may need to change it to Master if it is at the end
of the cable. Also, check and make sure your BIOS sees the new DVD
Burner. If it does, then check Device Manager (Click Start-Run-Type
devmgmt.msc and click OK) to see if it is listed in there. If it is in
there, but just isn't showing in My Computer, try this:

thanks Dave, Nathan, Bob, and Jerry. It was the jumper
setting on the back of the drive, it now recognizes the
drive and it will play a dvd (audio only) I tried it in
the nec burner and the liteon dvd drive and both display
black screen but will play audio only. I uninstalled and
reinstalled power dvd and tried several diff. dvd's and
no luck.... any other stupid things I overlooked?

Thanks.
