the new winamp full is great. you can open almost everything (via
plugin) except dvds, it's stable and light. for dvds i use media player

Try RealPlayer. I don't use it but it is an alternative.

Icouldn't get WMP11 to play DVDs, so I got VLC Media player free from VideoLAN, and it plays dvds fine.

I have been very happy with WinAmp. My system is so much happier with
WMP disabled/blocked.

I bought a audio CD and I have no problem running the audio files on the CD
but if I transfer the audio files to the hard drive, Vista Windows Media
Player keeps asking me for a lisence!

You have to turn of the DRM(digital rights management) stuff, and it will
stop it for the stuff not already set under it.

Or just uncheck the "Copy Protect Music" checkbox, which is unchecked by
default anyways. =)

Under the "Rip Music" tab, uncheck "Copy protect music".

Under the "Privacy" tab, uncheck "Download usage rights automatically..." ,
"Send unique player ID....", and "I want to make Microsoft software..."
boxes.

Click ok, and you're done.

Quite a lot of people find alternative players to get rid of this headache.
I personally use Quintessential Player(QCD) because I like the choice of
skins better. Winamp is ok, VLC is excellent as well.

requires DRM or it doesn't. Using WMP or QMP or BMP would generally result
in the same playback for the same file type. =)

Google DRM and see what pops up. If there wasn't such a backlash on this,
why are there so many programs to remove it? Why did Warner decide no DRM on
the catalog from Amazon. I'm not advocating piracy, but I damn sure want to
be able to do what I want with the music I bought without something
interfering with it. And actually it does matter. I purchased some music
from SNOCAP awhile back. An unsigned band called Hierosonic. They play ok
through WMP, and others, but when I run them in SAM broadcaster, it takes
upwards of 5 seconds sometimes to play the song.

if you're interested. It's kind of amusing, although the Windows
calculator skin for WMP is perhaps the most amusing. =)

It's not just the skins. QCD uses noticeably less resources than do WMP or
Winamp. For instance, Winamp will kick both cores up above 24% sometimes.
WMP keeps both cranked close to least 40% most of the time. QCD rarely goes
over 15% on one. Here are some screenshots to show you what I mean...

As you can see QCD is by far the best choice where resources are concerned.
I've been using it since it came out, and see no reason to stop. Fiancé even
uses it because Winamp keeps crashing under XP for her.

Sadly, DRM isn't often discussed logically (I don't "like" it, but that
doesn't mean I don't think issues are worthy of intelligent
non-emotionally-charged debate), so that would seem more a waste of time
than much more extremely guided research on the subject. Clearly people
love Things That Are Free without any regards to the actual costs in the
production and acquisition systems. *shrug*

I wasn't attempting to say that "some people don't feel strongly about DRM",
merely that either a player supports the file in question (DRM'd or not) or
it doesn't, and that either a file has DRM applied or it doesn't. If the
clip has DRM applied, finding an alternative player would not have much use
or effect. I get your initial point - "some people don't like DRM" - I just
don't think it follows logically that an "alternative player" has anything
to do with getting "rid of this headache". =)

I'm sorry WinAMP crashes for your fiance - you might check with WinAMP
support on that to see if they could fix it up.

The WMP example has a comparatively graphically intensive visualization
active, which would throw a monkey wrench into an 'exact' comparison. But
as long as people enjoy what they're using. =)
