replaced hard drive

I had to replace my hard drive and now I need to reinstall windows xp. My
system came with a restore cd that I just found out wont restore a new hard
drive only the origanal. I found downloads for what I think is what I need
but you have to put them on 6 floppy disks and my new system does not have a
floppy drive, so I can not put them on a floppy to transfer over to the old
one. How can I get my old system up and running again. Its a Compaq presario
5410US. Do I need to puy a floppy drive on my new HP with vista? Can I put it
on a cd? Thanks for your help in advance. ROB

Hi Rob,

Can you clarify a few things? You first stated you had to replace your
hard drive and needed to reinstall XP. But then you state, "Do I need
to buy a floppy drive on my new HP with Vista"? What exactly are you
trying to do?

I believe a restore CD should be able to image a new drive. What are
the error messages you are receiving when attempting the restore?

Sorry for the confusion Terry. I just bought the HP with vista and it does
not have a floppy drive. I spoke to microsoft and they said the restore cd
will not load in a new hard drive only the origanal one. they gave me a web
site for the download that I need but it says I have to put it on 6 floppy
disks and my new computer does not have one so I put it on a cd and tried to
install it on the old computer but it did not read it. I have the certificate
# on the computer that is down (compaq) but nothing works. I have the
origanal restore cd that came with the compaq but not the hard drive as it
foze up and is makeing clicking sounds. I had it checked and they said it was
shot at the repair shop in circuit city so I bought a new hard drive from
them and put it in and loaded the disk that came with the new hard drive to
get things started that went just fine. Now I am just trying to load the
windows back on it that came with the computer when I bought it useing the
system restore disk that came with it. Thanks again. Im sooo lost right now.

You should be talking to HP support, not Microsoft. HP (for Compaq) is responsible for making the
restore CD work.

I spoke to HP and they were no help. They just say my system is out of
warranty sorry. But I will try again. Thanks

If you just recently bought the laptop, it should be under warranty and
either Circuit City or HP should take care of it for you. You shouldn't
have to buy another hard drive this soon. I'd take the drive back and
talk to CC about your warranty options.

If you "just bought" the laptop with Vista (only been out a few months),
it should be under warranty. Even if it was for only 90 days they should
warrant it.

I can understand that you are confused because your post is very confusing.
You are not being specific or clear in the issue or what you want to
accomplish.

What I gather is you bought a new HP laptop with Vista and the hard drive
went out? Is that correct?

The hard drive was replaced by Circuit City - (under warranty?) Is that
correct?

Now this is where it get's confusing. Did you reinstall Vista?

What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to install XP instead?

Be clear and specific in the details.
