Replace fan on socket 478 HSF possible?

I've got a retail Celeron 2.4G socket 478 CPU. I'd like to replace just
the fan with a quieter one. I researched the subject and only find
complete replacement HSF units, no seperate fans. Any ideas? TIA.

Really need a picture of the top of the fan. The typical fan for
a Socket 478 heatsink is either a 50-mm or 60-mm one. It could be
screwed directly into mounting holes in the heat sink or into the
fins of the heat sink. You're in luck if this is the situation since
Socket 478 CPU's and their accessories are getting rare.

Get an entire new cooler. The heat sink on that CPU clogs with dust
too easily. New coolers are not that expensive. Zalman makes some
really nice coolers.

It's the Intel retail one, where it all clips together. It looks like
I'll need a complete new unit, but it seems like a waste to bin the
copper cored heatsink, its very nicely made.

It looks like that's the only way forward. Thanks anyway.

a bit of cloth or hoover bag paper held up by a piece of wre solves
that.

If you're a bit creative with a dremel tool/etc you might be
able to turn the fan housing plate into a mount for a
different fan, but it looks like to much trouble for what
you'd end up with. Since a Celeron 2.4 isn't so hot running
and has a heat spreader, you should be able to use a typical
low end heatsink but preferribly one wearing an 80 x 25 mm
fan (at low RPM for more noise reduction and longer life)
for best flow:noise ratio.

By getting a complete assembly the fan and heat sink will work better
as a unit. That way you can go for a quiet unit and not have to worry
about it not cooling. I still think one of the less expensive Zalman's
are the way to go. Those big mutha fans are super quiet if run on low
voltage.

However, that's only half the problem. The other problem, as you can
see from the thread I started here, is how to keep the heat sink dust
free. Otherwise you must clean it periodically - like every three
months. I use MBM5 to watch the CPU temp and I can see it when the
heat sink starts to get clogged.

The Zalman is easy to clean with those big winged fins.
