repartition hard drive(long story)

(Just the long version for fun: Question at the end)

I got a new system...intel E6700 dual core cpu + asus wifi deluxe etc
and assembled it.
I hooked my old IDE hard drive and a new SATA drive and booted from the
IDE with plans to migrate OS from ID -> Sata.

I booted on the old IDE drive taken from my old system.

In windows XP pro there, i installed Acronis to migrate my IDE
partition to some space on the Sata drive.

Acronis not only failed to do this, it actually just completely jacked
the IDE boot record (mbr?) and made booting from the IDE
impossible..what a waste of money that program is.

After some futzing around, i could get windows to boot by just holding
down the F6 key (skipping their os loader menu, which was corrupted
apparently), but uninstalling Acronis, following their MBR fix
procedure etc only ended up making my IDE drive UNBOOTABLE. Fukkers.
(uninstall acronis, but my MBR is still jacked. Then try their fix. No,
now I can't boot at all)

But before I did this, I partitioned my new Sata drive to its 300 GB
size from Windows.
So, I know windows, w/ drivers can handle the situation with this
drive.

However, after Acronis jacked my system I *had* to reboot w/ Windows CD
and install entire operating system on the SATA drive from scratch.

My CD version of XP would only partition the drive to 130 Gigs. What
options do I have besides wasting more money on useless programs like
Acronis Disk director? I want to get the 300 Gigs I bought; right now,
only 130 and no idea how to squeeze the rest out without trashing my
install.

any advice welcome: I'm really nervous about installing Acronis Disk
Director again. If it messes up my mbr, I'm going to lose it.

(I saw folks on boards w/ the same problem w/ Acronis that I had, it
tries to copy partition, reboots to begin, then says "bad sector 30" or
some sh!t and gets stuck in a OS loader with no way out! PIECE_OF_SH!T).

Easy way: once u get it working u can make the unused space a diff partion
in win xp. This happened to me, I have a 130gb and a 62 new partion. I had
a pre sp ver of xp. Your better off with 2 partitions If you have a new mobo
you should install from scratch what ver of windows: did you have a driver
for the sata?

You should have created what it calls the rescue CD and done it from there.

It works fine if you use it properly.

No you didnt. You could have done a repair install of the IDE drive.
My CD version of XP would only partition the drive to 130 Gigs.

You should have slipstreamed SP2 onto the
XP CD before installing XP on the drive.
What options do I have besides wasting more

Do it again properly. Do a repair install of XP on the IDE drive,
best done with a slipstreamed SP2 onto the original XP CD.

Install True Image again, create what it calls the rescue CD.

Boot that, use it to clone the IDE drive to the SATA drive.

Shut down, disconnect the IDE drive, boot the SATA drive.
I want to get the 300 Gigs I bought; right now, only 130 and
no idea how to squeeze the rest out without trashing my install.

You can just apply SP2 to it now.

Pretty childish.

Stupid users.

Thats a lousy way.

The only thing that makes any sense is to slipstream
sp2 onto the xp distribution disk before doing the install.

Nope.

If you have a new mobo you should install from scratch what ver of windows: did you have a driver
for the sata?

He must have to have installed it on that drive or its natively supported.

My CD version of XP would only partition the drive to 130 Gigs.

You probably just need to install SP1 or SP2 to enable 46bit logical block
addressing. You might want to consider creating a XP install CD with SP2
already installed. This process is called "slipstreaming". I'm sure you
can find a guide to doing this with whatever CD burning software you use
with Google.

In the meantime, install SP2. Then you can enlarge the 130GB partition
non-destructively using a different partition manager since Acronis
doesn't apparently like your system. It can be rather hardware
temperamental.

Maybe just make a boot floppy of BootitNG and use it to do the partition
resizing. The trial version is fully functional.

I have since finally made a bootable sp2 slipsstream disk . The only
problem I have with xpsp2 on my new mobo is with s3 suspend not resuming
some times.

I probably should reformat and reinstall but dont yet know how to transfer
all my settings, games software etc.

That sometimes is usually due to an inadequate
driver. Try updating the drivers that have later
versions available, starting with the video card driver.
I probably should reformat and reinstall but dont yet know how to transfer all my settings, games
software etc.

The best way to do that is to do a repair install.

Boot the slipsteamed XP CD. Tell it to install XP where its
currenty installed. DO NOT FORMAT THAT PARTITION.
The install will say that its found an existing install of XP
and offer to repair that. Accept that offer.

If your CD version of Windows XP does not contain SP2 then Windows CANNOT
recognize a harddrive larger than 137 GB.
