repairing windows xp

A friend was trying to clean out some old files (via explorer) and I think
she might have tossed a needed windows file as things are now not working
correctly (like Adobe and system restore). Isn't there a run command or a
dos command she can type in that will search her windows xp for any missing
files and ask for the install CD to restore them?

Pop the XP Cd into the drive and cancel the install screen. Click Start
button->Run and enter
SFC /SCANNOW

click the OK button and let System File Checker do it's thing.
