Repairing Windows Files

I recently installed Norton Internet Security 2004 on my XP Professional OS.
The installation required a restart of my machine. As the machine was
loading Windows again, the machine requested my password on my account. I
put in my password, Windows began the login process and immediately logged
back out. Safe Mode does the same thing and I believe that I just must have
some corrupt Windows files. How do I go about repairing the Windows files
without formatting my drive and wiping out my files? Thanks!

1. you could try a repair installation (boot off the cd).

2. install the hard drive as a secondary drive (or mount
with linux, etc.) and copy off the important files.
