I am having difficulty in completing a repair for XP
Home. My PC would not boot today & I am trying to access
Windows & multiple attemps to restart have resulted in
failure.

I have followed Michael Stevens process & get to the
point "To setup Windows XP, press enter", which I do. I
accept the license agreement & I am them asked to put the
CD from previous version of Windows (in my case it is
W98SE) into the CD drive & press enter.

In the next screen "XP Home Edition Setup" i am asked to
select an item in the list. The list shows 2 "Unknown
Disk" comments indicating that there is no disk in this
drive. The options listed are Enter=Install, D=Delete
Partition & F3=Quit.

If choosing Enter, I get the Stop error screen advising a
problem has been detected.

The technical information listed is as follows:

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xc00000005,0xF7637F3E,0x00000000)

setupdd.sys - Address F7637F3E base at F7613000,
DateStamp 3d6dd67f

In choosing D, it takes me back to Stop Error Screen.
Why are my hard drives not showing up? Solutions? Need
assistance badly!!

Hi, Tony. Thanks for the very clear and well detailed post. It sounds to
me like you are having hardware issues. Are the drives seen in the
BIOS? I would definitely do some hardware diagnosis, starting with the
drives. Usually I start with RAM testing, but in your case it might be
useful to start with the drives. Get a diagnostic utility from the
drive mftr.'s website, make a bootable floppy, boot with it (you'll
probably have to change your boot order in the BIOS so the floppy drive
gets accessed first) and do a full test on each drive. Then test the
RAM with Memtest86 (www.memtest86.com) if the drives test OK. Post back
after the tests if you need more help.
