how can i repair windows xp pro without doing a complete reinstall, as i
dont want to lose any data on C:/ if poss

Try to run the installer again, I think it has a "repair Windows" function

Boot with your XP setup disk
Enter and F8 to install XP (NOT recovery console)
R to repair Windows
