Will a repair of XP SP2 clean out any errors in the Registery or should a
full reformatt and clean reinstall be done to clean up the registery? Thanks

Theres no harm in trying a repair first. If that is unsuccessful you can
then format and clean reinstall.

But be sure to backup important data before doing a clean reinstall.

How do you expect to "repair xp SP2",thru booting to xp cd,repair....This
uninstalls SP2 along with all installed updates, leaving you with oem xp.It's
the same as clean install but with any corrupted files/folders repair wasnt
able to fix,a clean install with a format gets you in better shape, always.

It won't help with installed programs that may have corrupted registry
setting, but it will refresh the Windows settings. What are the errors? You
may have other options.
Repair Install

Only if the XP CD is pre-SP2.
along with all installed updates,

Only the updates released since SP2.
leaving you with oem xp.

Only if an OEM XP CD is used.

It is not, programs and settings are retained.

Neither a repair install or clean install are probably necessary in the OP's
situation.
And a clean install is not "always" the best choice.
