I have win xp home edition. There is no setup cd as computer bought from
PCworld with windows xp already installed. Factory recovery is possible but
will lose valuable financial data ( such as internet banking). Is there any
way to repair xp without going to this length. Please help

The OEM that do not provide a CD have removed many options.
Contact their tech support for options you may have.

Removing your hard drive and installing it as a slave in another computer
will allow you to copy the data prior to reinstalling Windows if that is
eventually required.

Remember this when you purchase your next computer.
Also let them know exactly why you did not choose to buy their computer if
that is what you decide.

Without a Setup CD you are not able to perform certain operations such
as a Repair Install.

However there is often more than one way to "skin a cat".

What are the exact problems you are encountering? Please include the
complete verbatim text of any and all error messages related to these
problems.

Good luck
