I was told I could repair a corrupted file without totally
erasing my hard drive. But when I start my recovery disk
it just says it will erase everything and replace windows
xp. Does anyone know if I keep going in the recovery mode
it will repair the file at some point or will it erase
everything? I do not want to erase everything, because of
some files. This all started when my computer would'nt
boot up into windows xp.

The devil is in the details.
What file are you referring to?

Windows xp \windows\system32\config\system
