Repair Installation

Hello,
Can anyone advice me,I am having a number of
problems,mainly updates, Windows,antivirus download and
installs ok,but if I try to download from a website(I
have tried about 10),so I am thinking of doing a repair
Installation,what I would like to know is if I do what
will I lose by going over the top of my original
Installation if that possable,if so what the best way of
doing it,I am running Windows xp Home SP1 with all
current updates installed,will I lose the updates,Email
files etc,hope someone can help,if I get downloaded files
of someone else they install ok,

You should not lose your data such as emails, But to be sure, back up
critical data. You will have to reinstall updates, starting with SP1, then
other updates, no more than about three at a time. Follow these instructions
for a repair installation:


Start the operating system from the CD-ROM,

When the computer starts from the CD, the system checks your hardware

and then prompts you to select one of the following options:

To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.


Press ENTER.


Press F8 to accept the Licensing Agreement.

A box lists your current Windows XP installation, and then the system

prompts you to select one of the following options:

To repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing, press
ESC.

Press R to start the automatic repair process.

Data files will be left alone - but you should *always* have a backup
before doing major work just in case, say, of a power failure at a
critical moment

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard disk, then boot the XP CD, start
Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this stage), then after the license
agreement take 'Repair Installation'. This will retain your existing
software installations and most settings. But Updates will have to be
run again, especially SP1;

It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.

If you have drivers that only come with SP1, like USB 2 ones, you will
need to update drivers for the devices concerned. You may find that
things like virtual memory settings and some aspects of appearance have
reverted to defaults
