Repair Installation option is not available

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 with Windows XP Home installed on the computer.
The computer crashed and I can no longer book windows. Windows tries to
boot, but after I get the Windows logo (loading) screen the screen goes blank
and the computer hangs. I have tried to boot the system using all of the
boot options (Safe Mode etc) but can not get the computer to boot.
Therefore I have tried to perform a repair installation (not repair console),
but when I get the stage in the process where the repair installation option
normally appears there is no repair option. Only options to install windows
in a different directory, replace the current installation and delete all
user information and files and F3 quit installation. How do I get the
repair installation option to appear???

Thanks, Larry

Hi Larry !

Follow the article 307545 or follow this link
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545 .

Not applicable:

" When you try to start or restart your Windows XP-based computer, you
may receive one of the following error messages:
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or
corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE
Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive
(file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate
System error: Lsass.exe
When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the
value provided as the current password is not correct."

The OP has none of these symptoms. Furthermore, he is obviously dealing
with an OEM install since the CD lacks the repair install function as
some OEM CDs do:

"Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if
your computer has an OEM-installed operating system. The system hive on
OEM installations creates passwords and user accounts that did not exist
previously. If you use the procedure that is described in this article,
you may not be able to log back into the recovery console to restore the
original registry hives. "

You don't not with that CD. Some OEMs cripple their CDs like that, why I
have no clue. I can't think of any purpose it would serve.

Borrow a genneric OEM XP Home CD and do the repair install. Either that
or buy one.
