Repair Install problem

A few months ago I upgraded from Win98 SE to XP Pro SP2. Everything seemed to
work fine until a few days ago when I recieved a blue error screen and upon
restarting a Win32 file was "corrupt or missing". I thought I could fix this
problem with a repair install but now I have a strange and possibly unrelated
problem. I have not been able to complete repair install because in the
startup screen a box appear which reads, "The file 'ASMS' on WinXP Pro SP2 CD
is needed. Type where file is located and click ok". It then gives me this
address, "globalroot\device\cdrom0\1386". I would love to click 'ok' except
that at this point I am unable to use my mouse and keyboard. I can use them
everywhere else except on the startup screen, thus I have not been able to
finish repair install. My mouse and keyboard are connected to a USB port and
I have already tried connecting them to the ps/2 port. Any ideas or
suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks.

Thank you all for your help. I was not able to do what you all recomended
since I was not able to use my keyboard or mouse on this screen. Luckily, I
happened to come by "How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents
WinXP from starting" and I did part1 which ended up working. Although I am
now able to use my computer for the most part it seems pretty unstable. After
about an hour of use it shut down by itself. It also gives me alot of
Explorer errors. I think the initial problem was that I installed a big
program which my computer was not able to handle. Last night I also got a
blue screen saying something about memory management, thereafter it performed
a scan disk and it seemed to be correcting some errors. Needless to say I
have already uninstalled that program and hopefully that will stabalize my
system. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on this? In particular,
the above article has a series of 4 parts and I only did one. Should I do the
rest? Thanks again.
