missing files in repair install of win xp

A

andrewl

I was attempting to repair install winxp pro because of
some weird quirks in my system (no drive letter appearing
for two different cd/dvd drives). Anyway after installing
the original files and the first reboot I got the
following dialogue box;

Files Needed

The file "asms" on windows Xp professsional cd-rom is
needed.

Type the path where the file is located then click ok.

copy files from;

the highlighted box says (globalroot\device\cdrom0\1386

It won't install....if I hit anything else I get the
following;

Fatal error;
An error has been encountered that prevents setup from
continuing.
One of the componentsthat windows needs to continue setup
could not be installed. The operation was cancelled by
the user ....press ok to view the setup log file...

if i press ok the log shows the same thing as above....if
I attempt to restart I get the same message....I can't
even run my old setup of windows, what should I do?
