I have two restore cd's and I don't want to reformat my emachine. Is there a
way to just do a repair install?

Sorry to use an existing thread but when I click New, I am not able to create
a new thread.
Lately, when I boot up my computer, the icons and the start button do NOT
come up. I have to reboot, either once or twice. I am running XP PRO. I am
using SP/1 and do not want to use SP/2. I have a gateway PC and the only
solutoin Gateway gave me was to do a restore from scratch. Can anyone
reccomend a fix for this?
Please help.

you can use a regular XP CD to perform a repair (service packs must match)

Reformat and, this time, install SP2.

I don't have a regular XP CD. I only have the quick restore that came with
my computer from Gateway. I do not rant to have to spend days restoring all
of my applications. Is there a fix on line somewhere?

yeh,

there is a way to do
a "manual" repair and
the info/instructions
can be found at microsoft.com

basically,
you can launch the recovery
console with a switch on
the winnt32.exe file
in your windows folder.

when you get into
recovery mode, you
can access the registry hives,
the backuped hives, etc....

as an additional tool for
you go ahead and make emergency
repair disks - right now. They
can come in real handy...

g.l.

btw, i recall being told by
my laptop manufacturer
that i could do a repair if
i launched the setup in
my \i386 directory. Briefly, setup
initiated but didn't go any further
than the new install dialog. The
repair function "might" have been
the next option if I proceeded
but didn't want to risk it...

Some of my programs do not work with SP/2. I already tried. I need a fix
that runs with SP/1. Is there a download I can get somewhere?

If you are using the E-machine restore CD's then 'no' there is no way of
'repairing' The restore disks will simply over-write the whole lot. And
remember, if you have partitioned your hard drive these will be over-written
too. E-machine, and many other manufacturer's allocated 'all' of the hard
drive to the operating system, so re-installing simply over-writes
everything.

The only option is a retail copy of XP. This will give you the option to
'repair'. I no longer use my e-machine recovery disks now i simply install
from a retail copy of XP.

You need an installation CD to do a repair installation. If you don't have
one, you can't do it. This is one of the several reasons why I would
personally never choose to buy a computer that comes only with a restore CD.

I just ran the XP update and I am still having the same problem.
I have to keep rebooting for Windows to come up.
Any other suggestions?
