Repair Console does not work

G

Guest

Hi,
I try to boot the windows from CD and then choose repair option 'R'
It takes me to C:\
Whatever command I type - It says - 'command not recognised"
It does not ask me for an Administrator's password.
I tried LOGON command and then windows 1
It takes me to C:/WINDOWS
Am I in recovery console now?
Is that where I can use repair commands ??
Please help

Go to:

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

Scroll down to, and then click on:

How to access the Recovery Console

There is a step by step with screen shots.

Also, the next link beneath that one:

Recovery Console in Windows XP

This is a MUST READ, from Kelly, describing the functions, limitations, and commands of
the Recovery Console.

Also, what is it that you need to repair? It might be something that needs to be fixed
using a method other than the Recovery Console.

Hello Rajeev,
For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type
recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press
ENTER.

For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the
command prompt, and then press ENTER.

see:-How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Hi,
I had a windows crash a few days ago. I ran CHKDSK and I was able to run the windows. I can access all my software, but I get windows error, where a report need to be sent to microsoft every time I go to Internet explorer. The error says Gator client application has encountered a problem & need to close. We are sorry for inconvinience - appl name: gmt.exe vesion 5.1.1.5
Exception report has several errors with ntdll.dll, gmt.exe, kernel32.dll etc.

Can I just copy i386\NTLDR and i386\NTDETECT.COM from my disk ??

Remove Gator.
Go to: http://www.pchell.com/support/gator.shtml

Then download, install and rub the free version of Ad-Aware:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

and remove what's left of Gator from your system.

If you can't use Internet Explorer to go to these sites, use someone else's system to view
the Gator uninstall instructions, and to download the free standard version of Ad-Aware.
Burn the Ad-Aware install file to a CD, then copy the file to your system from that CD,
and double click to install. Caution: Do not Delete anything with Ad-Aware until your
quarantine it first. That way if you Delete something that a program, or Windows itself
needs, you can restore it from the Ad-Aware quarantined files.

Yes you are.
Is that where I can use repair commands ??

The range of commands is limited - in a regular boot, go to Help And
Support and search on "Recovery Console Commands" with the quotes. The
principal ones that are of use in repairing a bad boot are

CD
Dir
Attrib
DEL
Copy
Expand
Fixboot
FixMbr
BootCfg (specifically with /Rebuild)
and to an extent diskpart

You cannot run any regular program not part of the recovery console

To do a Repair reinstall, do not use that R, but enter setup and the R
after the license agreement.

Another useful method if the system will not boot to a desktop is to
boot with the Menu using F8 and use
Safe Mode - Command Prompt

At which you can run regular DOS style commands and many GUI programs,
notably
C:\Windows\system32\restore\restrui.exe
which is the System Restore interface
