Renaming Thumbnails

I have 4 thumbnails, th1.jpg, th2.jpg, th3.jpg, th4.jpg.
I rename the first three to 01.jpg, 02.jpg, 03.jpg.
I then decide I want to insert a new one in the sequence so I rename
th4.jpg to 01a.jpg and then sort by name.
To rationalise the numbering I then rename:
03.jpg to 04.jpg
02.jpg to 03.jpg
01a.jpg to 02.jpg
I then find that the pictures displayed in the thumbnails are incorrect.
For example 02.jpg displays the picture for the old 02.jpg but when
opened it displays the correct picture.
Having read some of the other newsgroup items, I suspect that this may
involve the thumbs.db file but I would appreciate any information to
help me understand what is going on.

If there are 30 thumbnails, that's a lot of right clicks and a general refresh from the view
menu does not help. The only reliable method I have found is to delete thumbs.db, go to
another folder, then return to the original folder. A new thumbs.db gets generated and all is
displayed correctly. I would classify this as a bug, albeit a minor one.

It would and it looks a design decision optimised to quickly displaying folders (I talk/argue with the programmers that write the code - only yesterday they said that displaying custom icons is done after generic icons are displayed for performance reasons). What you do forces the creation of new thumbnails. Ctrl + A (select all on edit menu), then right click, Refresh Thumbnails should also do it.
If speed isn't an issue and you intend to keep renaming files turn off thumbs.db generation in Folder Options (always use a new thumbnail).
