Renaming the Network icon on the Desktop

David Jackson

Hello,

The context menu which appears when you right-click the Network icon on the
Vista desktop doesn't have a "Rename" item.

Is there any way to rename this icon or must it stay as "Network"?

Thanks.

It can be renamed.

Click Start, type Regedit.exe and press ENTER
Navigate to the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache

Double-click "@C:\Windows\system32\NetworkExplorer.dll,-1"

Set its value data accordingly. (Type the new name you want to assign)

Exit the Registry Editor.

Thanks very much for that - I'd never have found that in a month of Sundays!

Is there any reason why Vista buries this away in this way when earlier
versions of Windows allowed the name to be changed through the UI?

You're welcome David. No idea why this UI option was discontinued in Vista though.
