Missing icons

I had to run repair function from Vista installation CD. After running this
some shortcut icons are missing in both the start menu and desktop. When I
browse for the .exe files these do not show the correct icon either,
although the icon is still contained within the file. If I try to change the
icon for the shortcut the correct icon shows up in the properies dialog.
Strange thing is that if you rename the .exe file it displays the icon
correctly. Also you can use the icon contained in the .exe on a different
shortcut.

Please help - its driving me nuts!

Start>Programs>program you want>right-click on it>make a shortcut on the
desktop!
