Renaming Printers

AWe have someone in our office that travels between several offices and uses
networked printers at each one. He would like to rename the printers in his
"printers and faxes" applet so that when he goes to select a printer from the
drop down box within and application (i.e. Word), he can tell at a glance
which printer for the particular office he is in, he needs to select.
Is there a way to rename the printers with in the applet to relect how he
need to use them?
He is using windows XP pro edition with sp2
Any information would be greatly appreciated

The ability to rename a printer is all about how you install the
printer on the client. If you install the printer as a "local port"
you can rename, configure and do just about everything you could as if
the printer were on the local machine. This is easily done by using
the add printer wizard that we all have the tendency to forget about.
open the add printer wizard,
click next,
click local printer,
deselect the "automatically search" option,
select "create a new port",
select "local port" from the drop down,
the enter the unc to the printer e.g. :
\\server\printer
select the driver
and BINGO!

Now you have a network printer that xp thinks is local. This is the
Microsoft reccommended technique for adding network printers.

Thanks so much...little bit of a hassle having to reload the printers, but
your resolution worked like a champ!!
