Renaming multiple files

Is it possible, either via Windows or CMD to rename multiple files with
numeric names. I have several thousand files, numbered 000023.xxx through
002500.xxx and wish to renumber these with 5-digits rather than 6-digits. I
need to drop the leading zero so the files are 00023.xxx (using REN command
within DOS (CMD) truncates the last character, giving 00002.xxx. I must keep
the numeric file name and it must be only 5 characters; can always do these
one-by-one within Windows, but would take many days. Any help would be
appreciated. Please reply to "(e-mail address removed)". Thanks much in advance

You might try a google search

as doing it through XP may not suit your needs - Renaming a Group of Files

If you select a group of items in Windows Explorer and then choose File, Rename or
press F2, it will appear as though you are about to rename only the last item you
selected. After you type a new name and press Enter, however, you will find that all
items in the selection have acquired the new name—with numbers in parentheses to
distinguish one renamed item from another. For example, select three files with
dissimilar names, press F2, type NewName , and then press Enter. Your three files
will be named NewName, NewName (1), and NewName (2).
If you accidentally rename a folder full of files when you mean to rename only one,
press Ctrl+Z (or choose Edit, Undo Rename). The last of your files to be renamed
(NewName (2) in the example just given) will regain its former name. Press Ctrl+Z
again and another file will revert. Continue in this manner until all but the
intended file have shed their new names.
