Renaming Desktop Shortcuts

For some reason, XP will not retain my shortcut names for Outlook, My
Computer, Network Places, and Recycle Bin. When I rename these
shortcuts, the next time I start XP they are back to the old (i.e.
default) names. Why is XP doing this? BTW, I used Power Toys to rename
the recycle bin, which is not retained either, fir what that is worth.

Bob,

David told you the ultimate answer. Here is a workaround from Keith Miller, if you're interested:

You're forcing the icons to retain the name.
