Multiple Desktop Icons keep appearing

Has anyone seen this before? My desktop keeps filling up with shortcut
icons of the recycle bin and internet explorer pages. An example of the
names of the shortcuts are 'Shortcut (6) to Recycle Bin' and 'Shortcut
(6) to Copy of Temp ....'. When I delete them, the deskop fills up with
icons again with Shortcut (7) in the name and so on.
