Removing Windows Partitions

When I acquired my computer it had Windows 98 SE
installed and the hard drive was formatted into three
partitions: C, D, and E. I want to now totally wipe the
hard drive and reformat it into one C Drive (do away with
D and E) and install Windows XP. Anything on the
computer that is any good has been backed up so I want to
totally wipe it clean before installing the new program.
I was told that if I do an Upgrade installation, it will
not remove the partitions and will save files that I want
to remove. I have tried a custom install and was able to
delete D Drive but instead of that space going back into
C Drive, it comes up as unpartitioned space. When I try
to delete C it will not let me delete it because it says
there are temporary installations files there. The only
thing it let me do was install XP to the unpartitioned
space. Now I have a new D Drive with XP and also have a
C drive with all the Windows 98 stuff still there. How
do I go about Total reformatting the hard drive to one C
Drive and then installing Windows XP. I have also
applied this post to the 98 Group as I am not sure to
which group it best applies.
Thanks, Bowdrie

I had a similar problem and I had to go in and delete the
partitions and reinstall the operating system and that
formated the whole disk as one again.
