removing trojan horse virus

I currently have 2 files infected with a trojan horse virus according to my Norton Anitvirus program. These files are slideshow.exe and winview.exe. Norton was able to quarantine the slideshow.exe file, but unable to repair or quarantine the winview.exe file. I'd like to get rid of this virus. I tried using Stinger, but it didn't work. I've tried deleting these files, but get a message that I don't have access to do so. My next thought was to uninstall my Windows XP Home Edition altogether and then reinstall it, hoping to rid my hard drive completely. Will this work? How do I go about uninstalling Windows XP if this is a resonable option for me. Not sure what else to do. Any suggestions appreciated.

Daryl,

NO NO NO NO NO ...
Do NOT reinstall anything! Just remove the infection.
Most likely you’ll need to disable System Restore, and boot in Safe Mode:

Start/Restart your computer and start pushing F8 key twice per second. Select Safe Mode on Windows Advanced Options screen, and push Enter.

But check for the exact instructions here (enter virus name):

Then run these scan to make sure you are clean:

And check this to prevent similar problems in the future:

I followed your recommendation to go to the securityresponse.symantec.com website following the directions they give for removal of trojan horse viruses. All seemed to go well until I got to step #5, part D. My infected file did not appear in the list referred to. Reading further in part J, I was given the impression that because of this, all would be well. I restarted the computer in Normal mode and ran Norton Anitvirus again to verify that the infected file was repaired and the same file (winview.exe) showed up as infected. Is there not any other way to get rid of this virus? If I took it to some professional, what would they differently? Help!
