Removing TIFs in XPHome

F

Frank Bohan

Can anyone recommend a freeware program that will *fully* remove Temporary
Internet Files in XP? I have a program (scrubxp) which removes all entries
in <C:\Documents and Settings\FrankBohan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files>
at startup/closedown but I have recently discovered that there are hidden
subfolders in the TIF folder. The files in these subfolders show up in my
Virus Checker (also in Power Searcher) but are otherwise invisible. The
subfolders have random alphanumeric names (similar to ones which are visible
in previous OSs). A check on Properties in the Temporary Internet Files
shows that the hidden files occupy 55MB (80MB on disk). I have "Show Hidden
Files" checked, but although this shows the Local Settings Folder, which is
normally hidden, the aforementioned subfolders remain hidden. I hesitate to
try deleting the entire TIF folder in case some hidden system files are
removed. Any ideas???

I've also found that I can make a directory listing of the hidden files,
itself about 3MB, but cannot otherwise access them (I've tried using Command
Prompt). Despite the "Content.IE5" I'm using IE6". Sample entries from the
filelist:

C:\Documents and Settings\Frank Bohan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\X11AM9ZD\wbk7C0.tmp
C:\Documents and Settings\Frank Bohan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\X11AM9ZD\wbk7C2.tmp
C:\Documents and Settings\Frank Bohan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\X11AM9ZD\wbk7C4.tmp

Doing a search for *.tmp in the Windows Search produces "no results".

(apologies for this lengthy post)

Many thanks for your post, Wayne. I'm not sure why you should think I'm new
to the group as I post here regularly. I've seen the program you mention
recommended, but until I found the hidden files thought that the programs I
already have were clearing up the TIF files, as they were removing all the
visible ones.

I've downloaded Index.dat Suite and will try it in a day or two.

(Minor quibble: My understanding was that something could be "unique" or
not, but not "rather unique")<g>

Hello Frank:

Sorry if I offended you. I just thought that anyone who hangs around
here would know about " Index.dat Suite " and what it does.

You are right about some Internet cleaners that do not remove the hidden
files in the IE cache.
