Why does the Content.IE5 folder not appear when you navigate to it from Computer

John

First, I did this:

Windows start button>Computer>C>Users>(My
Name)>AppData>Local>Microsoft>Windows>Temporary Internet Files. All the
files showing in this folder appear to be cookies and other junk you get
from using the internet. I don't see any folders.

then, I pasted the following link into the white search bar the appears just
about the Windows search button when you click the latter:
C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5. Now, a link to the Content.IE5 folder appears. I follow
it and there are 4 folders showing, and just two cookie-looking files. In
one of those folders is what I was looking for: A Word attachment that I had
mistakenly saved to this folder.

So, I went back and tried to navigate to this Content.IE5 folder following
the first method dhown above. But, as I've already stated, when you open
Temporary Internet Folders, you get a list of cookie-looking files.

Why do you see different things under Temporary Internet Files when you
employ these two approaches? I am showing hidden and protected files when I
do it both ways.

Hi, John.

Those TIF (Temporary Internet File) folders are DIFFERENT! They don't play
by the usual rules for files and folders. This behavior is not new in Vista
or even WinXP; they go back to the beginning of IE, I suppose. Even in the
Command Prompt window, they behave quite strangely.

You best hope of extracting a file from the TIF is to start IE, then click
Tools | Internet Options. On the first tab (General), there are some
buttons to check to manage the TIF. I'm running Win7 RC and IE8, so the
language is slightly different from what you see, but the general pattern is
the same. I see Browsing history, with buttons for Delete and Settings.
Clicking Settings gets me another window with tabs for Move folder, New
objects and View files. Click this last button and see if you can find your
file. From there, you're on your own; I haven't tried to copy files from
here or save them to a folder. Proceed with caution!
