Removing the backup Copies from upgrade to XP-Pro

I have upgraded my laptop to XP-Pro, SP-2. My problem is that once I did
this I have very little room left on my 5.2 gig. HD. Does XP create a
backup file that of the original installation that remains on the HD? Can
that be deleted once the the system is up and running?
My system only has Office XP, a maping program, Palm desktop. This has
taken up almost 4 full gig.
Any suggestions for clearing up some room on the HD appreciated...
