I've just been given a computer and at the top of the
screen under "View" there is a drop-down list containing
something I need to remove. I cannot figure out how to
remove this; can anyone help?

At the top of which screen? Are you describing the Address drop-down list?

You can right-click the taskbar, and choose Properties. In "Taskbar and
Start Menu Properties", choose the Advanced tab. In the middle of the
Advanced page, there is a [Clear] button, described with "To remove records
of recently accessed documents, programs, and Web sites, click Clear".

Rather than whacking this with the big hammer and clearing everything, you
can download and install Tweakui. On its Paranoia page, you can selectively
items individually.

If web ads are to be believed, there is more than one way for someone to
find what web sites you have visited, documents you have accessed, or
programs you have run.
