Removing programs from startup

How do I stop programs from loading at startup on Windows 2000 Professional?
With Windows 98 I go to Run, type MSCONFIG and use the startup tab to
uncheck items I don't want starting. Some programs don't offer the option
of stopping the loading on startup and we'd like to have them set up only to
start when we actually need them (through the Start menu or a desktop icon
shortcut).

Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Remove the program from the startup directory in the all
users or the default user's profile. If its not there you
need to look in the registry for the run or runonce keys
to remove the program.

MSCONFIG was not included in Win2000 but
was added back in WinXP. Search the web for
the file (msconfig.exe) and down load. It will run
ok in Win2000.

Easiest solution, IMHO, download and install freeware program:
"startup control" by Mike Lin. I like it a lot better than msconfig.

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Note: To install it, right click on the downloaded file
"startupCPL.msi" and choose "install".
It makes it simple to get rid of a lot of programs that set themselves
to startup with every bootup, but which you don't want to clutter up
your computer.
It will install in your control panel and you can create a shortcut to
the desktop from there.

Best wishes,
Jack

Apparently you can also use msconfig from windows XP, but
I dont know which files copy to get it working.
