removing programms from start up

Where can I see the programs which automatically start on W2k start up and
switch some of them off?

Natively you can; Start\Settings\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer
Management(Local)\System Information\Software Environment\Startup
Programs|View|Advanced, then in the "Location" column, you'll find the path
to the "Startup" location either in the "Startup" directories or from the
registry's "Run" keys. (note that this window is read-only so you must
manually navigate to the location below to edit or otherwise delete)

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
%USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

You can delete the shortcuts that you no longer want to run.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can delete the string value for the program you no longer want to run.

or copy msconfig from Windows XP to the "windows" directory
or AutoRuns from sysinternals
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Autoruns.html

Thanks, Dave.
This is what I see in ComputerManagement(Local)\System Information\Software

(I have Russian Windows)
If I wanted to remove Mirablis ICQ, how do I do it? Is it possible to do it
without editing the Registry for the perspective of messing with the
Registry makes me nervous

You have what appears to be a virus/Trojan on your computer
(kernels32.exe). Seems that Kapersky AV didn't pick it up. See here
for more information on it:
http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/kernels32/index.php

If you are not comfortable editing the registry you can try disabling
the automatic startup in the actual program options. Or, as Dave
suggested, you can put a copy of msconfig in your System32 folder and
launch it by entering msconfig in the Start Menu > Run box. You can
get a copy of msconfig here: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

You can also try CodeStuff Starter:

Further to what John said, you'll need to look in the "Location" column to
see where it starts up from.

You can run Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then
if you check the box for "Also backup....", then the reg will also be backed
up to
%systemroot%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%systemroot%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

Then archive the files in
%systemroot%\repair\RegBack
These would, in effect, be registry restore points.

You can replace registry hives from within the recovery console by copying
the files from your archive to;
%systemroot%\system32\config

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2000
Setup CD or the Windows 2000 Setup floppy disks. If you do not have Setup
floppy disks and your computer cannot start from the Windows 2000 Setup CD,
use another Windows 2000-based computer to create the Setup floppy disks. At
the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a Windows 2000
installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The Recovery
Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do not have
the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%
