removing program

a student staying with us downloaded windows messenger
and i want to remove it from my computer. i went through
the remove program routine but it is still in the pc,
running in the background. please help.

In my local free newspaper, I found the following fix

for removing Messenger from active use. This fix is
from: (e-mail address removed). She has a weekly column of
computer advice for such problems.

1. Click Start, the Control Panel, Performance &
Maintenance, Admin Tools, and Services.
2. Scroll down the list of services to Messenger, and
double-click.
3. In the Messenger Properties window, click on the
General tab. Next to Startup Type select Disabled.
Then, under Service Status, click Stop.
4. Click OK. This should stop all Messenger spam.
