Removing partition on HP

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing!! I have recovery disks for my new
HP running XP. Since I have disks I thought I no longer needed that
partition (D:\).
I right clicked on it and opened it and pressed delete to remove the
contents. It now shows nothing in it.
But if I look at "properties", it looks like it did before.
The help file from from HP implies it can be removed but recovery would be
faster if it were there.
1 - Do I need it?
2 - If I do, how can I get it back - (I don't want to lose all my stuff on
C:).

Best just to leave it alone.

What size is the partition, is it worth using the space for something else?

It is (was) the OEM restore, I assume.

It was what you would use to restore your OEM computer back to it's
"original state".

Since you said that HP implied "recovery would be faster if it were there",
I assume that the machine also came with restore media (CD/DVD)?
(They should have. If they didn't, notify that HP that you want restore
media -- and you aren't going to pay for it either.)

You don't need that partition. Its just wasting space. What you may want
to do is look for a program that will allow you to delete "D" partition and
expand your "C" drive into the recovered space. One such program is
"Partition Magic", but I'm sure there are similiar freebies out there. I
haven't stayed on top of Windoze partitioning software for a while...

If you want to free up even more space, you can also disable Window's
built-in "system restore". I find it to be a huge waste of space and don't
use it on any of my Windoze installs. But don't disable it unless you are
confident that 1) You can "stay ahead" of your machine to keep from screwing
something up and 2) When you do screw something up (we all do), you can fix
it no matter what it is.

Thanks for the help
It's large - 8.6 GB.
Also, I tried running PC help & tools/HP PC recovery tools disk because
somewhere it said that this has instructions for deleting the recovery drive.

I created a disk OK and when I run the disk it asks if I want to re-start
the PC (only option). It runs doing its diagnotic thing for a while then it
gets hung-up (says there may be a hard drive problem) and Windows never
starts. I ran chkdsk \f but there doesn't seem to be a problem. It's only
after I remove that disk that the PC will start Windows.
