REMOVING OS & PARTITION

L

LESLIE

Hi
Does anyone know what the correct process/procedure is to
remove a W2K server OS and the partition it resides on
from a dual boot XP HOME/W2K server system?

Hi Leslie,

Do you really need to remove the partition? No, you really don't. All you
need to do are these two steps:

1) Boot to WinXP, open Windows Explorer and delete the Win2000 system
folders.

2) Start/run C:\boot.ini, remove the line referencing the unwanted system
from the [operating systems] section, then change the timeout= line to 3.

Dear NutCase,
Thanks so much for your answer/information. The answer to
your question: Do you really need to remove the
partition? is yes. I have another question: Could I also
remove the w2k os by going to the "add remove component"
folder and remove it there? Also, could you elaborate
more on the: 2) Start/run C:\boot.ini, remove the line
referencing the unwanted system
from the [operating systems] section, then change the timeout= line to 3.? Thanks

Hi Leslie,

1) No, you can't remove it using add & remove, that is for installed
software, not installed operating systems. To remove the unwanted to
partition (again this is not necessary, all you really need to do is delete
the Win2000 system folders or format the partition it is on), start/run
diskmgmt.msc and right-click the partition that the installation is on and
click "delete partition". Under no circumstances should you do this if this
is the boot partition, you will lose access to the WinXP installation as
well if it is.

2) You need to edit boot.ini to remove the line that references the unwanted
operatng system. Try it this way if it makes you more comfortable: Go to the
Control Panel/System/Advanced tab/Startup and recovery settings/"edit"
button. This will have the same effect. If you delete the Win2000 partition,
you can also start/run msconfig, and go to the boot.ini tab and click the
option to "check all boot paths".
