Removing Orphaned Server

Linn Allen

I have a single domain running two WIN2K Servers both of
which are Domain Controllers. At some point in the past
one of the servers failed (server1) and was replaced by a
new server (server2). Server1 will never return. Server1
had apparently been the forest root DC and had held all
the FSMO roles. I have seized all FSMO roles to server2
and I am now trying to address all of the Event Viewer
error messages that I am receiving.

I am getting a great deal of replication traffic errors
all of which reference off not being able to contact
server1. When I go into ADUC and look in Domain
Controllers server1 is still listed. When I try to delete
it I get an error message telling me that I can't delete
this object even though it no longer physically exists on
the network.

How do I remove server1 as an AD object and allow server2
to assume the role as the forest root DC?

You will need to perform a metadata cleanup in order to remove the old DC.
Take a look at the following article.

.
Thanks for your help. I do remember doing this from
class. Now I can get rid of all the garbage errors and
look towards the actual problems. Thanks again.
