Removing operating system

Brian Hagland

I have a Gateway desktop and an IBM ThinkPad. I tried to
do a upgrade on the ThinkPad with Gateway's operating
sytem. Now I can'tuse the ThinkPad becuase I can't get
past the Activation screen. My desktop came with Windows
XP. The Thinkpad came with Windows 95. I need to know how
to remove Gateway system and get it back to Windows 95.

Hi Brian,

You will need to format (and possibly repartition) the system and reinstall
the original Win95 system that the ThinkPad came with. A WinXP upgrade would
have completely replaced the Win95 system, as it is not a true upgrade path
(in other words, it will install over a Win95 system, but will not retain
any remnant of it for uninstall purposes like it would with Win98 or WinME).

Greetings --

If you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup the
old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, then all
you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel >
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

Use the restore CD for the Laptop. You are not permitted to install
the XP from the Gateway on another PC, since it is most likely an OEM
version, besides, it would either be painful , or not work at all, to
install XP on a machine that came with 95.
