Removing number of unread mesages from login page

I am sharing my computer with my wife and on the login
page it shows 12 unread messages under my user. These
messages were for a email address that was deleted
(Deleted the account with out opening the unread mail).
There is no longer an email account listed in accounts
(Outlook Express)for the old email address that had the
12 unread messages. I have even added back the old email
account and deleted the 12 messages that were unread,
then deleted the account again. Still it shows that
there are 12 unread messages. How do I remove or tell the
system that there really isn't any unread messages in
Outlook express? It just will not go away. Help me
please, it's very annoying. Thanks in advance for all
your expert assistance.
