Removing Media Player from servers

I don't want to install the latest critical update for Media Player on my
servers. I frankly don't want Media Player on my servers at all; I can't
fathom any legitimate use for it there.

It's probably a forlorn hope, but do you think that maybe, if I removed
Media Player from my servers, Windows Update might be smart enough to
realize I don't need to update it?

In any case, does anyome have any idea how I to properly uninstall Media
Player? Win2K Server doesn't seem to provide any option to remove it, even
though Win2K Pro does. It's not even one of those hidden add/remove
options. Sure, I could rip it out by the roots, but I hate to get that
crude with servers.

JSI's Tips and Tricks repository is one of my favorite places.
Unfortunately, it strikes out on this one.

As I said in my original posting, "It's not even one of those hidden
add/remove options."

The "WMPOCM" line is not present in the server's sysoc.inf file. Neither
is the "; old base components" line to which Tip 2274 refers. The document
makes no reference to Windows 2000 Server at all; it appears to assume the
Server version is the same as the Pro version.

It occurred to me that it might be possible to simply add the above line to
the sysoc.inf file. However, the referenced wmpocm.inf does not even
exist. Interestingly, Media Player is definitely present, and Windows
Update still wants to update it.

So we're still screwed.

In the mean time, any thoughts on why Microsoft would be so insistant on
keeping Media Player installed on its servers?

here is what i did (and it works for ME on MY windows 2000 server
services pack 4 installs so far):
create a .reg file and a .bat file. run the .reg file. run the .bat
file. answer no when windows asks you to insert the server media cd.

PLEASE make sure you know what you are doing, check that the lines are
not wrapping, use your brain, etc.

create a .reg file (eg: clean.reg) with the following:

Gad why would anyone want to do that to their system? I think there is a way to get Media Player in Add\Remove Windows Components. I'd do it that way.

Uh, huh. And now use IE to visit a site that uses .wmv clip or
something else that needs WMP. Thought you uninstalled it, eh,
but the clip still plays in WMP ?

If you truly want to close security holes like IE, OE, and WMP
then tactics like the previous poster suggested are your only
choice.

Oh I doubt that. The only way that could happen is if there is a automatic install of the components usually achieved by
a cab at the site or pointed to at Microsoft. If you have enable install on demand checked in IE then that is the
problem.
